The beliefs, behaviors and things that are common among a certain group of people (their way of life)
what is society?
A community of people that share the same space, follow the same rules and understand that they are different from other groups
what are norms?
Unwritten rules
what are values?
beliefs that are important to someone in particular
what is the difference between non material and material culture?
Nonmaterial culture - things
what is a signifier?
anything used to communicate
what is semiotics?
the study of non verbal meanings (cultural in this case)
what is a linguistic relatively hypothesis according to the theories of Sapir & Whorf?
It argues that language affects how we see the world because we are more likely to be aware of things if we have words for them
what is a cultural universal?
something that you can find in pretty much every human society, no matter where you go.
what is the difference between pastoral societies, industrial societies, and agrarian societies?
pastoral societies: hunting & gathering
industrial societies: factories & offices
agrarian societies: agriculture
what is industrialization?
the process of producing machine goods
what is a industrialized society?
most of the population lives in urban areas and work in factories or offices rather than the other ways
what are the differences between subcultures & countercultures?
subcultures: a group that has unique and different values and norms than others
countercultures: a groups that rejects the norms and values of a society
what is assimilation?
when a smaller group of people start to adopt the customs, beliefs, and ways of life of a larger group they’re living among.
what is multiculturalism?
different cultural groups that live together, but they keep their own identities and traditions
