aphi Flashcards
contrary
both could be false
contradiction
1 must be false and 1 must be true
logically consistent
they all can be true, both cant be true or false
logically inconsistent
both could be false only one could be true, they cant all be true
all frat members are students, no students are frat members
self contradictory or not?
not a self contradictory because all frat members have to be students but students don’t have to frat members
basic premises
used to establish the conclusion directly
Mapping
premises go under one another when they are supporting
they go on the same level when they are entangled (arrow between them) with each other, for the conclusion to work you need both
multiple premises independently support the conclusion when the argument will still stand if we lost one of them
deductively valid (think of IF its true then can the conclusion be true)
if its conclusion follow with certainty from its basic premises
if its inconsistent for its basic premises to be true but the conclusion false
and if the truths of the premises force the conclusion to be true
the premises of a deductively valid argument imply the conclusion with certainty
the premises of a inductively strong argument imply the conclusion with probability
you can show an argument is invalid if by thinking of a counterexample
when you see the word ONLY think of CAN or COULD
