Chapter 3 Flashcards
Specific heat
Amount of heat that must be absorbed or lost for 1g of a substance to change its temperature
Heat of vaporization
Quantity of heat of a liquid must absorb for 1g of it to be converted from liquid to gas
Evaporative cooling
The surface becomes cooler during evaporation because only molecules with the lowest kinetic energy are liquid
Solution
A liquid that is in a homogenous mixture of 2 or more substances
Solvent
The dissolving agent of a solution (water)
Solute
Substance that is dissolved
Aqueous solution
Solution with water as a solvent
Hydrophillic
Having an affinity for water
Hydrophobic
Having no affinity for water
Molecular mass (molecular weight)
The sum of the mass of all the atoms in a molecule
Mole
Number of grams of a substance that equals its molecular/atomic mass in daltons
Molarity
A measure of solutes concentration referring to number of moles of solutes per liter of solution
Hydrogen ion
Aa single proton, has a charge of +1
Hydroxide ion (OH-)
Water molecule that lost its protons
Hydronium ion (H3O)
Water molecule that has an extra proton
