What is culture?
Handy defines culture as the way we do things round here
What are the factors that influence culture?
Technology, size, diversity, age, history, ownership
What are schein 3 when it comes to culture?
Aretefacts and creations, values, basic assumptions
What are artefacts and creations?
Elements can be seen and heard e.g body shop having green as label
What is espoused values ?
Truth not hype, identified from stories and opinions
What are basic assumptions?
So deeply embedded that members are no longer consciously aware of them
What are handy’s 4 things in relation to culture?
Power, role, task, people
What is power culture?
The ego of the key person comes first. Reacts well to change, quick decision making and small run business
What is role culture?
Job description comes first, slower decision making, slower predictable business e.g, government
What is task culture?
Getting the job done right and on time comes first, flexibility, adaptability, project environment
What is people culture?
Everyone fulfils personal goals and objectives e.g., solicitors firms
What is indulgence in relation to hofstede?
Free gratification of basic natural and human drives related to enjoying life and having fun
What is restraint in relation to hofstede?
Suppression of gratification of needs by way of strict social norms
What is individualism/ collectivism in relation to hofstede?
Extent to which people are expected to take care of themselves
What is time orientation in relation to hofstede?
How much society values long standing values and traditions
