What is motivation level?
relates to people’s desire to perform tasks and put effort into their job
What is perception?
individuals select, organise and interpret the stimuli they recieve
What are attitudes?
persistent feelings and behaviours tendencies directed towards specific people, group, ideas or objects
What is personality?
Combination of emotional, attitudinal and behavioural responses of an individual
What is a role?
A role is the pattern of behaviour expected by someone who occupies a particular person
What is role behaviour?
Certain types of behaviour can be associated with a particular role in an organisation
What is role set?
this describes the people who respond to an individual in a particular role
What are role signs?
these are visible indications of a role e.g., dress, styles
What is role ambiguity?
this arises when an individual is unsure of what role they are to play, or others are unclear of that person’s role and so hold back co-operation
What is role conflict?
this occurs when individuals find a clash between different roles they have adopted
What is role incompatibility?
This occurs when individuals experience expectations form outside groups about their role that are different to their own role expectation
What is a group?
Any collection of individuals who perceive themselves to be a group
What characteristics to groups have?
- a sense of identity
- loyalty to the group
- purpose and leadership
What are informal groups?
these are groups of individuals voluntarily join to meet their social or security needs. Individuals dependent on each other and influence each others behaviours
What are formal groups?
Team, groups that are created to carry out specific tasks, communicate and solve problems. Membership is normally determined by the organisation
What are some benefits to team working?
- increased productivity
- synergy
- improved focus and responsibility
- improved problem solving
- greater creativity
- increased satisfaction
- increased motivation
- improved information flows
What are some negative effects on groups?
- Conformity
- the abilene paradox (outcome no one wants)
- risky shift or group polarisation (riskier decisions not taken alone)
- groupthink
what is a team?
more than a group. can be described as any group of people who must significantly related with each other in order to accomplish shared objectives
what do teams usually do?
- share common goal
- enjoy working together
- made up of diverse people
- loyal
- team spirit
Are teams informal or formal?
Formal
What was Belbins’ theory in relation to teams?
In order for a team to operate effectively, it needed a balance of nine different roles
