Chapter 29: Plant Diversity I (how plants colonized land) Flashcards
1
Q
Charophyte
A
Green algae that is the closest living relative to land plants
2
Q
Charophyte/Land Plant Similarities
A
- Rings of cellulose synthesizing proteins in the plasma membrane
- Peroxisomes: minimize loss of organic products from photorespiration
- Structure of flagellated sperm
- Formation of phragmoplast
3
Q
Phragmoplast
A
Group of microtubules that forms between daughter nuclei of diving cell, between anaphase and telophase. Acts as a scaffold for the cell plate, which forms across the midline of the dividing cell. The cell plate then forms a new cross wall separating the daughter cells.
4
Q
Most similar charophytes to land plants
A
chara and coleochaete
5
Q
Sporopollenin
A
durable polymer that prevents exposed zygotes from drying out (because charophyte live in shallow waters)
