Chapter 25 (L) Flashcards
tumors that are harmless and do not spread to other parts of the body
benign tumors
cells that produce abnormally and in an uncontrolled manner form…
neoplasms or tumors
random, disorganized, uncontrolled growth pattern
malignant tumors
can divide, ability to migrate from one tissue or organ to another
malignant tumors
term used to describe the movement of cancer cells into adjoining tissue
regional invasion
the process by which cancer spreads to distant sites
metastasis
common sites of metastasis are
- liver
- brain
- bone
- lungs
malignant transformation
- age
- diet
- hormones
- chronic irritation
what causes malignant transformation
when normal cells are exposed to substances called carcinogens that damage DNA and occurs in 4 steps
4 steps of normal cells to malignant cells
- initiation
- promotion
- progression
- metastasis
cancer has metastasized to distant parts of the body
stage 4
limited spread of the cancer occurs in the local area, usually to nearby lymph nodes
stage 2
tumor is larger or has spread from the site of origin to nearby tissues
stage 3
malignant cells are confined to the tissue of origin, no invasion of other tissues takes place
stage 1
TNM staging
specifies the status of the primary tumor
regional lymph nodes
distant metastases
T0
no sign of tumor after treatment
Tis
malignancy in epithelial tissue but not basement membrane
T1
minimal size and extension
