Chapter 23 Animal Tissues & Organ Systems Flashcards
Physiology considers the _____ of the _______ ______.
Function of the body parts
Organ systems consist of?
Two or more organs that are physically or functionally joint
Explain the nervous system.
Detects, interprets, and responds to stimuli from outside and within the body. (Brain and nerves)
Explain the endocrine system.
Produces hormones and works with the nervous system to control many body functions. (Metabolism, reproduction, response to stress)
Explain the skeletal system.
Provides framework for the muscles to attach, making movement possible. Houses bone marrow, protects soft organs, and stores minerals.
Explain the muscular system.
Support Posture and enables body to move. Helps maintain body temperature.
Explain the digestive system.
Breaks down nutrients into chemical components that are small enough to enter the blood. Eliminates undigested food. (Esophagus, stomach, intest)
Explain the circulatory system. (A.k.a., cardiovascular)
Vessels carry blood throughout the body, nourishing cells, delivering oxygen, and removing waste.
(Red & blue)
Explain the respiratory system.
Delivers oxygen to blood and removes carbon dioxide. (mouth and lungs)
Explain the urinary system.
Excretes nitrogenous waste and maintains volume and composition of body fluids. (kidneys and bladder)
Explain the integumentary system.
Protects the body, controls temperature, and conserves water. (skin)
Explain The lymphatic system, a.k.a. immune system.
Protect the body from infection, injury, and cancer. (Green all over body)
Explain the reproductive system.
Manufactures gametes and enables the female to carry and give birth to offspring.
What two systems coordinate communication? And what did they used to do that?
Nervous- neurons (fast) and endocrine-hormones (slow)
What 2 systems support and move the body? Using what?
Skeletal- bones, ligaments, cartilage. Muscular- skeletal muscles.
What three systems work together to acquire energy?
Digestive, circulatory(cardiovascular), and respiratory systems
What Three Systems protect the body? Using what?
Urinary-kidneys, ureter’s, urinary bladder, urethra.
Integumentary- skin, glands, hair, nails.
lymphatic (immune)- lymphatic vessels, spleen, tonsils, other lymph nodes
What system produces the next generation?
Reproductive system
What is homeostasis?
A state of internal constancy
What is negative feedback?
Action that counters and existing condition. (Think About the thermostat heater)
The study of the structure of animal bodies is called _______.
Anatomy
The pancreas does what?
Secrete enzymes that regulate blood glucose levels. (Think of the pancreas as maintaining homeostasis with blood sugar levels.)
What does insulin do?
Insulin decreases blood glucose concentration
What increases blood glucose concentration?
Glucagon
What happens when you do not regulate blood sugar?
Diabetes or hypoglycemia
What is hyperglycemia?
Blood sugar is too high
What is hypoglycemia?
Blood sugar is too low
