Chapter 20 Flashcards
Hypertension
systolic reading of 140+ mmGH, a diastolic reading of 90+mmHG or both
idiopathic disease, occurs without a known cause
1) anyone under the age of 35 with hypertension needs to be evaluated for one of the diagnosis
2) any client that is hypertensive must see a doctor
can lead to heart attack, stroke, kidney disease etc.
Target organ cardiac disease
left ventricular thickening or hypertrophy due to untreated or inadequately treated hypertension…etc.
beta blockers, calcium channel blockers, ACE inhibitors, ARBs diuretics, and alpha blockers
all lower blood pressure
can cause blood pooling, so need a longer cool down after walking, jogging and circuit weight training
also don’t elevate heart rate like normal
Controlled hypertension
can exercise with limited restrictions
intensity: 40-50%maximal oxygen uptake, low intensity
contraindications: an activity that would increase intrathoracic pressure (no valsalva maneuver, breathe properly)
Safe exercises: wide variety available
Comorbid conditions
- musculoskeletal conditions or diseases: degnerative joint diseses, rheumatologic diseases
- neurological disorders: stroke, myasthenia gravis, muscular dystrophy
- Vascular diseases: carotid artery disease, cardiac conditions, aneurysms
