Chapter 17 Flashcards
SEC
Series elastic component
acts as a spring
stretch reflex
body’s involuntary response to an external stimulus that causes rapid stretching of the muscle, signal is sent to spinal cord, which responds in a concentric contraction of same overstretched muscle
ex: knee jerk in docs office
potentiation
enhancement of the stretch
deceleration stage
eccentric phase, preloads the agonist muscle groups.
SEC stores elastic energy and the muscle spindles are stimulated
ex: half squat of jump shot
Amortization
transition phase between eccentric and concentric phases
most important, critical for power developent
delay where spinal cords transmits singals to the agonist (stretched) muscle group
but can’t last to long or it wastes away as heat
ex: when downward half of jump shot stops, amortization starts. When upward movement starts, amortization ends
Concentric phase
response to events during eccentric and amortization phases
