Chapter 2 Brain Diseases Flashcards
what cause mental illnesses due to organic complications?
neurotransmitter imbalance, brain injury/abnormality (biological issue)
what is the cause of epilepsy?
electrical storms in the brain that manifest in different ways
what is one extreme way to treat epilepsy?
by severing the corpus callosum
what is multiple sclerosis?
it attacks the myelin sheath and may recur several times in life; immune system mistakenly identifies sheath as foreign item
what is the cause of Guillain-Barre syndrome?
faulty immune system where body attacks the nerves; causes tremors, muscle weakness, and others
what is the cause of Parkinson’s disease?
rapid tremors, sensory-motor damage, exhaustion, memory change due to loss of dopamine producing nerve cells
what is encephalitis?
inflammation of neurological membranes (brain swelling)
what is the cause of encephalitis-lathargica?
caused by encephalitis, includes manic behavior, aggressiveness, and impulsivity
what is the cause of hydrocephalus?
cerebrospinal fluid accumulation
what is the cause of Rasmussen’s encephalitis?
seizures due to brain/CNS inflammation
what is the cause of stroke?
blockage/rupture in blood vessels in the brain
what is the cause of aneurysm?
blood vessels become dilated as a result of buildup of blood
what is Alzheimer’s disease?
form of dementia that includes a reduction of cognitive abilities/adaptive living skills (dendrites start to tangle); caused by too little acetylcholine
what the cause of Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome?
B1 deficiency that results in the brain “crumbling”; often because of alcohol abuse
what is the MAOA gene?
aka warrior gene; can cause aggressive behavior
