Chapter 2 Flashcards
Wording Effects of Survey
The way you word questions will affect the results
Blind Procedure
When the participants doesn’t know about what the experiment is going to be on
Critical thinking
Thinking that does not blind accept arguments and conclusions. Rather it examines assumptions, discerns hidden values, evaluates evidence, and assess conclusions
3 attitudes of the Scientific Viewpoint
Skepticism, Curiosity, and humility
Ethical Principles of Psychology
Psychologists has to tell the truth, take care of the patients, and they cannot harm them
Hindsight Bias
The belief that someone could have foreseen it
Overconfidence
When a person is overestimating their abilities
Placebo
Experimental results caused by expectations alone; any effect on behavior caused by the administration of an inert substance or condition, which the recipients assumes is an active agent
Empirical Approach
A study conducted via careful observation and scientifically based research
Replication
Repeating the essence of a research study, usually with different participants in different situations, to see whether time basic finding extends to other participants.
Experiment
A research method in which an investigator manipulates one or more factors (independent variables) to observe the effect on some behavior or mental processes (the dependent variable). By random assignment of participants, the experiment aims to control other relevant variables
Random Sampling
When you chose a participant without any bias.
Illusory Correlation
The perception of a relationship none exists or also known as a fake correlation
Double Blind Procedure
An experimental procedure in which both the research staff are ignorant/blind about whether the research participants have received the treatment or the placebo. Commonly used in drug evaluation
Control
The variable that stay the same
