Chapter 19 test cards Flashcards
What is a magnet?
Any material that attracts iron and materials that contain iron
Where is the magnetic force strongest?
At the magnetic poles
What do magnetic poles that are unlike each other do?
Attract
What do magnetic poles that are like each other do?
Repel
What is the area of magnetic force around a magnet?
Magnetic field
What are magnetic field lines?
Lines that map out the magnetic field around a magnet
What is the path of a magnetic field line?
They spread out form one pole, curve around the magnet , and return to the other pole.
What do magnets attract?
Iron and materials that contain iron
Which end of a magnet always swings freely?
The north pole
What is the center region of an atom?
The nucleus
What is the smallest particle of an element?
An atom
What is a magnetic domain?
A grouping of atoms that have their magnetic fields lined up in the same direction.
What is a ferromagnetic material?
A material that shows strong magnetic properties
What is a magnet made from a material that keeps its magnetism for a long time?
A permanent magnet
True or False
Heating a magnet will destroy its magnetism
True
True or False
If a magnet is broken in two the result is a destroyed magnet
False
True or False
Each smaller magnet has its own north pole and south pole
True
What magnet does earth represent?
A bar magnet
True or False
The geographic and magnetic poles are at the same location
False
True or False
Magnetic declination changes over time
True
What does Earth’s magnetic field affect?
The movements of electrically charged particles in space
What affects earth’s magnetic field?
The particles
What are the Van Allen Belts?
Two doughnut shaped regions that contain electrons and protons traveling at very high speeds
How far above earth’s surface is the Van Allen belt?
Between 1,000 and 25,000 kilometers
What pushes against Earth’s magnetic field?
The solar winds
What is the region of Earth’s magnetic field shaped by the solar wind called?
The magnetosphere
What is an aurora?
A glowing region in earth’s atmosphere caused by charged particles from the sun
What are 3 properties magnets have?
Magnets attract iron and materials that contain iron, magnets attract or repel other magnets, and one part of a magnet will always point north when allowed to swing freely
What is the difference between protons and electrons?
Protons are particles you can find on the inside of a nucleus and have a positive charge. Electrons are particles that have a negative charge and are found on the outside of the nucleus
What is a magnetic domain?
A grouping of atoms that have their magnetic fields aligned
What are the four common ferromagnetic materials found in nature?
Iron, nickel, cobalt, and gadolinium.
What do the Van Allen Belts contain?
electrons and protons traveling at very high speeds.
