Chapter 11 test cards Flashcards
What is the formula for pressure?
Force/Area
What makes the pressure exerted by a fluid?
All of the forces exerted by the individual particles in a fluid.
As your elevation increases, what does the atmospheric pressure do?
Decrease
As water pressure increases, what does depth do?
Increase
How is atmospheric pressure measured?
Barometer
What are the two types of barometer?
Mercury and aneroid barometer.
What is buoyant force?
Force that acts in the direction opposite to the force of gravity.
What effect does buoyant force have on an object?
It makes the object feel lighter.
What is Archimedes’ principle?
The buoyant force acting on a submerged object is equal to the weight of the fluid the object displaces.
What is the formula for density?
Mass/Volume
How can you tell whether an object will float or sink?
By comparing densities
What is Pascal’s Principle?
When the force is applied to a confined fluid the change in pressure is transmitted equally to all parts of the fluid.
What does a hydraulic system do?
Multiplies force by applying the force to a small surface area.
What is Bernoulli’s principle?
As the speed of a moving fluid increases the pressure within the fluid decreases.
What is lift?
An upward force
