Chapter 18 Bacteria Notes pt.2 Flashcards
What are Obligate Aerobes?
A type of bacterial metabolism that is unable to grow in the absence of free oxygen (mycobacterium tuberculosis) WHEN THERE IS -NO- OXYGEN IT CAN’T GROW LISTEN TO THIS NOT THE OTHER BULL CRAP
What are Obligate Anaerobes
A type of bacterial metabolism that is unable to grow in the presence of free oxygen (clostridia) WHEN THERE -IS- OXYGEN THEY CAN’T GROW LISTEN TO THIS NOT THE OTHER BULL CRAP
What are Facultative Anaerobes
A type of bacterial metabolism that grow in either the presence or absence of free oxygen (E.coli)
What are photoautotrophs
Bacterial nutritional modes and classification that use solar energy to reduce carbon dioxide to organic compounds (PHOTOSYNTHESIS)
What are chemoautotrophs
Bacterial nutritional modes and classification that oxidize inorganic compounds to obtain the necessary energy
What do chemosynthetic autotrophs do
Reduce CO^2 to an organic compound
What do Aerobic Saprotrophs do
Decompose most large organic molecules to smaller molecules by feeding on dead things
What is a Mutalist
A type of prokaryote that has a Nitrogen fixation and can use atmospheric N^2 to make a nitrogen source
What is a commensalists
A type of prokaryote that can live with other organisms providing nutrients in exchange for protection
What are parasites
A type of prokaryote that derives nutrients from its host, damaging or killing the host
Where do archaea live
HARSH CONDITIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! >:0
What are methanogens
Archaea that produce methane from hydrogen gas and carbon dioxide
What are Halophiles
Archaea that require high salt concentrations for growth and have special chloride pumps that bring CL ions to the interior of the cell to prevent water loss
What are Thermoacidophiles
archaea that have plasma membranes that contain unusual lipids that can tolerate high temperatures (80 degrees Celsius)
