Chapter 14 (History of Life/ Fossils) Flashcards
What was the atmosphere of early earth like?
-Very Hot
-Water Vapor, Nitrogen, Carbon Dioxide
What was the weather like on early earth?
-Rainstorms with Lightning
-Volcanically Active
There was a huge amount of what type of energy?…
Kinetic
What is the earliest period of the earth known as?
The Hadean eon
When did early earth form?
4.6-4.4 billion years ago
What are the 2 ways we learn about the age of earth and it’s layers?
-Relative Dating
-Absolute Dating using radio metrics
Define Relative Dating
The science of determining the relative order of past events without determining their absolute age
Define Absolute Age
The TRUE AGE of a rock or fossil, telling scientists how many years ago an event happened
Why isn’t all rock data found in the earth?
Because when the mid-oceanic ridge comes up, it slides under sediment deposits, and enters the subduction zone where it will melt
Define Radiometric Dating
A process for determining absolute age of rocks and fossils
When will RADIATION be given off of an atom
If the balance f protons and neutrons inside the nucleus are very unequal
Define Radiation
The emission of particles and energy from an unstable atom
What happens to atoms that emit radiation
They become a different element (a more STABLE element)
Define Decay
When a parent nucleus emits radiation
What are the two common forms of Carbon that organisms intake through their lives?
C-14 and C-12
