Chapter 18 Flashcards
Antigenic Determinants are _________.
Epitopes
What are Toxoids made from?
exotoxins diphtheria and tetanus
In the Hep B vaccine you are getting __ protein of the virus.
1
What was different about the old pertussis vaccine?
It used the whole capsule; had many side effects; lasted longer
The tuberculosis test is done by DTH which stands for?
delayed type hypersensitivity
Name 6 serologic tests.
- Precipitation RXN
- Immunodiffusion test
- Agglutination RXN
- Neutralization RXN
- Fluorescent antibody test
- Enzyme linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA test)
Precipitation RXN’s
IgM or IgG; soluble antigen; can tell if you have hep B antibody
Immunodiffusion test
soluble antigen
Agglutination RXN (blood typing)
involves 3 tests:
- direct agglutination rxn
- Indirect (passive) agglutination test
- Hemagglutination test
Neutralization Rxn
Involves 2 tests:
- toxin neutralization test
- virus neutralization test
Fluorescent Antibody Test
A test in which a fluorescent dye is linked to an antibody for diagnostic purposes
Enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA)
is used to test for HIV; can test 94 separate human serums for HIV in the wells at once; the bottom of the well has HIV virus in it, and antibodies will bind to this HIV if the test is positive; if positive the diagnosis of HIV must then be confirmed by the Western blotting test.
