Chapter 17 Flashcards
Big Head
Clostridium (novyi, sordellii, chauvoei)
head butting during fighting can cause bruising or lacs that allow clostridium to thrive
swelling and infection, dx on clinical signs, treat with abx
Black Dz
Clostridium novyi
death :-O dx on necropsy (damn) if you somehow know the animal has it, tx with tetracyclines.
preventable, vaccination
Brucellosis
Sheep = brucella ovis
Goat = b. melitensis
also b. abortus fr cattle
*ram = epididymitis* sheep = abortion goats = abortion storms, lame, mastitis, diarrhea
dx aggutination or complement fixation
preventable w vaccine, gotta kill them
b. malitensis causes Malta Fever in humans
Caseous Lymphadenitis
Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis
resp signs = tachyp, dysp, cough, + wt loss
dx culture and lymph node abscesses
tx by removing
Chlamydophilosis EAE
Chlamydia psittaci
abortion, stillborn, or weak lambs
ELISA Fluor ab staining, culture isolation
abx
vaccines only prevent abortion
C. Pefringens
know this card
all 4 types cause diarrhea in lambs
A = diarrhea neonates
B = LAMB DYSENTERY - bloody diarrhea, high mortality
C = diarrhea lambs and goats
D = FEEDLOT LAMBS WITH HIGH CONCENTRATES AND LAMBS IN GOOD CONDITION
dx on clinical signs, prevent by vaccinating parasite control and gradual feed changes
Joint III
staphylococci, streptococci, Corynbacterium, actinomyces, and coliform bacteria
warm, painful, and swollen joints, lame, leukocytosis, umbilical cord abscess
abx
sanitary conditions and overcrowding prevention can reduce possibility. lepto spread thru contaminated urine or water
Scrapie
prion
suffolk sheep most commonly dx with scrapie
neuro + hair and wt loss…aggressiveness, ataxia, starring, tremors, seizures
pin the tail on the prion
REPORTABLE - Scrapie Flock Certification Program
Vibriosis
Campylobacter jejuni and campylobacter fetus
#1 cause of abortion in sheep, stillbirth, and weak limbs
dx on culture, tx with abx
Toxoplasmosis
Toxoplama gondii
abortion, white chalky foci of necrosis and calcification up to 2 mm in diameter in cotyledons
ELISA, modified agglutination test, indirect fluorescent antibody test
reduce cat access to sheep area and equipment
Blue Tongue
Orbivirus, culicoides gnat vector
mouth ulcers, lame, fever poss - can cause abortion
viral isolation (fr blood or aborted fetuses)
prevent thru insect control
commonly causes abortion in sheep
caprine arthritis encephalitis
retroviral
neuro + arthritic + mastitic
spread thru fomites (needle) and ewes-lambs
AGID test
don’t feed colostrum fr infected dams to prevent or heat pasteurize milk
contagious ecthyma
also known as contagious viral pustular dermatitis, orf, sore mouth, contagious pustular dermatitis, cutaneous pustular dermatitis, and scabby mouth.
pustules, then brown-black crusts on oral cav, eyelids, teats, feet
isolate sick animals
Commercial vaccines are available but are not recommended
for disease-free herds
highly zoonotic
Ovine Progressive Pneumonia
Retroviridae
cough + bronchial exudate, encephalitis and mastitis, anorexia fever depression
dx on necropsy: ELISA AGID or virus isolation
no treatment for ovine progressive pneumonia
Entropion
Inward rolling of the eyelid which causes irritation of the cornea and conjunctiva-usually bilateral
Signs: blepharospasm, photophobia, epiphora, keratoconjunctivitis
Treatment: antibiotics or surgery
Prevention: Reduce housing dust, don’t use affected animals
