Chapter 16 vocab Flashcards
Magnetic pole
1 of 2 points, such as the ends of a magnet, that have opposing magnetic qualities
Magnet
Any material that attracts iron or metals containing iron
Magnetic force
The force of attraction or repulsion generated by moving or spinning electric charges
Magnetic field
Exists in a region around a magnet in which magnetic forces can act. Closer the lines, stronger the force
Ferromagnet
Magnets made with iron, nickel, or cobalt and have strong magnetic forces
Electromagnetism
The interaction between electricity and magnetism
Solenoid
A coil of wire with an electric current in it
Electromagnet
A coil with a soft core and acts as a magnet when an electric current is in the coil
Electric motor
A device that converts electrical energy into mechanical energy
Armature
A loop or coil of wire that can rotate
Commutator
Reverses the direction of the electric current of the wire
Galvanometer
Measures current, a small electromagnet
Electromagnetic induction
The process of creating a current in a circuit by changing a magnetic field
Electric generator
A device that coverts mechanical energy into electrical energy
Transformer
A device that increases or decreases the voltage of alternating current
