Ch7 Vocab Flashcards
Volume
A measure of the size of a body or region in three-dimensional space
Matter
Anything that has mass and takes up space
Meniscus
The curve at a liquid’s surface by which one measures the volume of the liquid
Mass
The measure of the amount of matter in an object
Weight
A measure of the gravitational force exerted on an object; it’s value can change with the object’s location in the universe
Inertia
The tendency of an object to resist being moved or, if the object is moving, to resist a change in speed or direction until an outside force acts on the object
Physical property
A characteristic of a substance that doesn’t involve a chemical change, such as density, color, or hardness
Density
The ratio of the mass to the volume of a substance
Physical change
A change if matter from one form to another without a change in its properties
Chemical property
A property of matter that described a substance’a ability to participate in chemical reactions
Thermal conductivity
It’s the rate at which a substance transfers heat
State
It’s the physical form in which a substance exists, such as solid, liquid, or gas
Solubility
It’s the ability of a substance to dissolve in another substance
Ductility
It’s the ability of a substance to be pulled into a wire
Malleability
It’s the ability of a substance to be rolled or pounded into thin sheets
