Ch 11 Vocab Flashcards
Periodic law
The law that states that the repeating chemical and physical properties of elements change periodically with atomic numbers of the elements
Periodic
Describes something that occurs or repeats at regular intervals
Period
In chemistry, it’s a horizontal row of elements in the periodic table
Group
A vertical column of elements in the periodic table; elements in a group share chemical properties
Metals
An element that’s shiny and conducts heat and electricity well
Non metals
An element that conducts heat and light poorly
Metalloids
Elements that have properties of both metals and nonmetals
Semiconductors
An element or compound that conducts an electric current better than an insulator but not as well as a conductor
Alkali metal
One of the elements of group 1 of the periodic table
Alkine earth metal
One of the elements of group 2 of the periodic table
Transition metals
Groups 3-12
Lanthanides
Elements in the 1st row that follow lanthanum
Actinides
Elements in the 2nd row that follow actinium
Halogens
One of the elements in group 17. Halogens combine with most metals to form salts
Nobel gases
Elements in group 18; Nobel gases are unreactive
