Ch 14 Vocab Flashcards
Ionic compound
A compound made up of oppositely charged ions
Chemical bond
The combining of atoms to form molecules or compounds
Covalent compound
A chemical compound formed by the sharing of electrons
Indicator
A compound that can reversibly change color depending on conditions such as pH
Acid
Any compound that increases the number of hydronic ions when dissolved in water
Base
Any compound that increases the number of hydroxide ions when dissolved in water
Neutralization reaction
The reaction of an acid and a base to form a neutral solution of water and a salt
pH
A value that’s used to express the acidity or basicity (alkalinity) of a system
Amino acid
Small molecules made up of carbon oxygen and nitrogen atoms
Cellulose
An Insoluble substance that helps make up plant cell walls
Glycogen
A substance deposited in bodily tissues as a store of carbohydrates
Molecule
A group of atoms bonded together
Salt
And ionic compound that forms when a metal atom replaces the hydrogen of an acid
Organic compound
A covalently bonded bonded compound that contains carbon
Hydrocarbon
An organic compound composed of only carbon and hydrogen
Carbohydrate
Class of energy giving nutrients that include sugars starches and fibers; of one or more simple sugars bonded to together
Lipid
A type of biochemical that does not dissolve in water; fats and steroids are lipids
Protein
A molecule that’s made up of amino acids that is needed to build and repair body structures and to regulate processes in the body
Nucleic acid
A substance made up of subunits called nucleotides
Catalyst
A substance that changes the rate of a chemical reaction without being used up or changed much
Hemoglobin
A red protein responsible for the transportation of the oxygen in the blood of vertebrates
Biochemicals
Involving chemical reactions in living organisms
Saturated hydrocarbons
Hydrocarbon that’s saturated with hydrogen
Unsaturated hydrocarbon
A hydrocarbon that’s not saturated with hydrogen
Covalent bond
A chemical bond that involved the sharing of electron pairs between atoms
Ionic bond
The compleat transfer of valence electron(s) between atoms
