Ch1 Vocab Flashcards
Scientific method
A series of steps followed to solve problems, including collecting data, forming a hypothesis, and stating conclusions.
Science
The knowledge obtained by observing natural events and conditions in order to discover facts and formulate laws or principals that can be verified or tested
Observation
The process of obtaining information using the senses.
Hypothesis
An explanation that’s based on prior scientific research or observations and that can be tested
Data
Any pieces of information acquired through observation or experimentation
Model
A pattern, plan, representation, or description designed to show the structure or workings of an object, system, or concept
Theory
An explanation for some phenomenon that’s based on observation, experimentation, and reasoning
Law
A summary of many experimental results and observations; a law tells how things work
Technology
The products and process that are designed to serve our needs
Engineering
The process of creating technology
Engineering design
The process engineers use to develop new technology
Prototype
A test model of a product
Cost-benefit analysis
The process of determining whether the cost of doing something is worth the benifit
Bioengineering
The application of engineering to living things, such as humans and plants
Assistive bioengineering
Engineering that results in a product or process that changes living organisms
Meter
The basic unit of length in the SI
Symbol = M
Area
A measure of the size of a surface or region
Mass
A measure of the amount of matter in a object; a fundamental property of an object that isn’t affected by the forces that act of the object, such as gravity
Volume
A measure of the size of a body or region in a three-dimensional space
Density
The ratio of the mass of a substance to volume of the substance; often expressed as grams for cubic meter for solids and liquids and grams per liter for gasses
Temperature
A measure of how hot or cold something is l; specifically a measure of the average kinetic energy of the particles in an object
