Chapter 16 Motivating Operations Flashcards
Abolishing operation (AO)
A motivating operation that decreases the reinforcing effectiveness of a stimulus, object or event
Behavior-altering effect
An alteration in the current frequency of behavior that has been reinforced by the stimulus that is altered in effectiveness by the same motivating operation
Conditioned motivating operation
A motivating operation whose value-altering effect depends on a learning history
Motivating operation (MO)
An environmental variable that alters the reinforcing effectiveness of some stimulus, object, or event and alters the current frequency of all behavior that has been reinforced by that stimulus, object or event
Evocative effect
An increase in the current frequency of behavior that has been reinforced by a stimulus (the stimulus that is increased in reinforcing effectiveness by the same motivating operation)
Function-altering effect
A relatively permanent change in an organism’s repertoire of MO, stimulus, and response relations, as a result of a consequence (reinforcer, punisher) or response occurrence without consequence; also called repertoire-altering effect
Establishing operation (EO)
An environmental variable that increases the effectiveness of some stimulus, object, or event as a reinforcer and increases the current frequency of all behavior that has been reinforced by that stimulus, object, or event
Reinforcer-abolishing effect
A decrease in the reinforcing effectiveness of a stimulus, object, or event caused but a motivating operation
Reinforcer-establishing effect
An increase in the reinforcing effectiveness of a stimulus, object, or event caused by a motivating operation
Unconditioned motivating operation
A motivating operation whose value-altering effect does not depend on a learning history
Value-altering effect
An alteration in the reinforcing effectiveness of a stimulus, object, or event as a result of a motivating operation
Abative effect
A decrease in the current frequency of behavior that has been reinforced by a stimulus (the stimulus that is increased in reinforcing effectiveness by the same motivating operation)
