Chapter 10 Planning Research Flashcards
Direct replication
An experiment in which the researcher makes every effort to duplicate exactly the conditions of an earlier experiment
Double-blind control
A procedure that prevents the subject and the observers from detecting the presence or absence of the treatment variable
Placebo Control
A procedure that prevents a subject from detecting the presence or absence of the treatment variable
Replication
Repeating a previous experimenter conditions within an experiment
Systematic replication
An experiment in which the researcher purposefully varies one or more aspects of an earlier experiment
Treatment Drift
Occurs when the application of the IV during later phases of an experiment differs from the way it was applied at the outset of the study
Treatment integrity
The extent to which the IV is applied exactly as planned and described and no other unplanned variables are administered inadvertently along with the planned treatment; also called procedural integrity
Type I error
A researcher concluded that the IV had an effect on the DV,when it did not. Also called false positive
Type II error
A researcher concludes that the IV did not have an effect on the DV, when in truth it did. Also called false negative
Component analysis
An experiment designed to identify the active elements of a treatment condition, the relative contributions of different variables in a treatment package and/or the necessary and sufficient components of an intervention
