Since 1970- put all drugs and put them into five schedules.
Scheduling drugs is based on medical use , potential for abuse , safety or propensity for dependence.
Schedule 1
High potential for abuse
No currently accepted medical use in treatment in US
Lack of accepted safety for use of the drug under medical supervision
Ex: Heroin LSD marijuana peyote methaqualine
Schedule 2
High potential for abuse
Has currently accepted medical use in treatment in US , with severe restrictions though
Abuse nah lead to severe psychological or physical dependence
Ex: amphetamines , some morphine derivatives, cocaine , pcp
Schedule 3
Potential for abuse less than drugs in one and two
Has currently accepted medical use in treatment
Abuse of drug may lead to moderate or low physical dependence or high psychological dependence
Ex : some barbiturates c some opium derivatives , glutethimide
Schedule 4
Low potential for abuse
Currently accepted medical use in treatment in US
Abuse of drug may lead to limited physical dependence or psychological dependence relative to the drugs in schedule 3
Ex: choral hydrate , tranquillisers and some stimulants and depressants
Schedule 5
Low potential for abuse
Abuse may lead to limited psychological or physical dependence
Ex: some derivatives of Codeine, some extracts if morphine
Reverse drug sting operations
The reverse sting narcotic sale is when undercovers loss as dealers and sell large amounts of narcotics to known traffickers
Effective in dealing with methamphetamine traffickers and crack cocaine dealers
Manpower intensive - 20-25 officers to be done safely 5-6 cars
Drug courier profile
“Operation pipeline”
Agents observing suspected drug traffickers and developing a pattern of behavior typical of those who use commercial al airlines or public highways for drug trafficking.
Originated with cops stationed at airports looking for people paying for tickets with cash.
Because these actions can be innocent the practice has drawn criticism from civil libertarians( profiling and unconstitutional )
Goals of drug investigation
Identify and located known drug sellers
Understand different rules of drugs available in street , price, packaging methods
Identify locations of frequent drug abuse activity
Reduce the availability of drugs through the aggressive apprehension of drug users and sellers
Asset forfeiture (technique in drug enforcement)
Take the profit out of illicit drug sales by seizing money or property that was either used to facilitate a drug crime or acquired with illicit drug revenues
1984 comprehensive crime control act (CCCA) provides civil provisions for asset forfeiture
Most state laws provide for the seizure of assets in drug cases
