Chapter 14 Flashcards
Social Psychology
the study of how we think about, influence, and relate to one and other
A-B problem
issue of how well we can predict behavior on the basis of attitudes
Central Route Persuasion
logic-driven approach, using data and facts to convince people of an arguments worthiness
Peripheral Route Persuasion
Responses to incidental cues, such as the speakers attractiveness. AKA when external factors (besides the actual logic of an argument) influence behavior. (buying shoes because the basketball player was wearing them)
Cognitive Dissonance Theory
the theory that we act to reduce the discomfort we feel when two of our thoughts are inconsistent.
Some people who view themselves as animal lovers eat meat and may feel discomfort when they think about where their meat comes from
triangular model of love
sterner’s view that love involves combinations of intimacy, passion, and commitment
attribution
belief concerning why people behave in a certain way
fundamental attribution error
bias in the attribution process
example: teenager gets into trouble with the law, individualistic societies are more likely to blame the teenager than the social environment of the teenager
actor-observer effect
attribute our own behavior to situational factors but to attribute the behavior of others to dispositional factors
Akbar believes he is unable to stop gambling because his friends all gamble and are a bad influence, yet Tim is unable to stop gambling because he is addicted to gambling
self-serving bias
ascribe our successes to internal, dispositional factors but our failure to external, situational influences
conformity
change our behavior to adhere to social norms
Asch study
Solomon Asch studying if and how individuals yielded to or defied a majority group and the effect of such influences on beliefs and opinions.
agression: bio & chem
bio: agression can come from our genetics, numerous structures and chemicals involved, it is in our nature
chem: testosterone (men more aggressive than women)
social facilitation
persons performance is increased when other members of a group engage in similar behavior
diffusion of responsibility
sharing of responsibility for a decision or behavior within a group
