Canthus
corner of the eye
Choroid
middle, vascular layer of the eye located between the sclera and retina
Ciliary body
portion of the eye that connects the choroid to the iris; contains ciliary muscles which control the shape of the lens
Cones
photoreceptor cells of the retina responsible for color and central vision
Conjunctiva
thin, delicate mucous membrane lining the eyelids and anterior eyeball
Cornea
transparent layer of tissue covering the anterior eyeball
Fovea centralis
depression in the macula that is concentrated with cones; area of clearest visiion
Fundus of the eye
posterior portion of the inner eyeball that can be visualized w/ an ophthalmoscope
Intraocular pressure
pressure exerted against the outer coats of the eyeball
Iris
muscle that dilates and constricts to control light entry to the pupil; colored portion of the eye
Lens
transparent, biconvex structure behind the pupil
Macula
small, yellowish area above the optic disc containing the fovea centralis
Nasolacrimal duct
duct that runs from the lacrimal (tear) sac to the nose
Nicitating membrane
third eyelid; piece of conjunctiva reinforced by cartilage that protects the eye
Optic disk
portion in the posterior eyeball here the retina and optic nerve meet; blind spot
Optic nerve
cranial nerve that carries nervous impulses from the eye to the brain
Orbit
bony cavity of the skull containing the eyeball
Palpebra
eyelid
Pupil
dark opening of the eye through which light passes
Refraction
the bending of light rays
Retina
light-sensitive innermost layer of the eyeball that contains rods and cones
Rods
photoreceptor cells of the retina responsible for night and peripheral vision
Sclera
the tough, white, outer coat of the eyeball
Tapetum lucidum
iridescent layer of epithelium that gives the eye the property of shining in the dark; improves night vision
Uvea
vascular layer of the eye made up of the iris, choroid, and ciliary body
Vitreous chamber
posterior chamber of the eyeball containing vitreous humor
Vitreous humor
clear, jelly-like fluid in the vitreous chamber that gives the eyeball its shape
Anophthalmos
congenital anomaly in which the animal lacks one or both eyes
Cataract
clouding of the lens leading to decreased vision
Chalazion
granuloma of the eyelid due to obstructed sebaceous gland
Corneal ulcer
erosion of the corneal epithelium
Distichiasis
double row of eyelashes causing irritation to the conjunctiva
Ectropion
turning outward of the eyelid
Entropion
turning inward of the eyelid
Enucleation
removal of the eyeball
Epiphora
overflow of tears due to an obstructed lacrimal (tear) duct
Esotropia
crosseyed
Exophthalmos
forward protrusion of the eyeballs
Exotropia
deviation of one eye outward
Floaters
particles in the vitreous fluid that cast shadows on the retina; vitreous floaters
Fluorescein stain
dye used to stain the cornea to help visualize injury
Follicular ophthalmitis
hypertrophy and prolapse of the nicitating membrane; cherry eye
Glaucoma
increased intraocular pressure resulting in damage to the eye
Goniotomy
incision into the anterior chamber to treat glaucoma
Hordeolum
inflammation of the sebaceous glands in the eyelid
Hypertropia
condition in which one eye deviates upward
Hypopyon
pus in the anterior chamber of the eye
Hypotropia
condition in which one eye deviates downward
Macrophthalmia
abnormal enlargement of the eye
Macular degeneration
degeneration of the macula causing loss of central vision
Microphthalmia
abnormally small eyes
Miosis
abnormal contraction of the pupils
Mydriasis
abnormal dilation of the pupils
Nuclear sclerosis
drying out of the lens w/ age
Nyctalopia
night blindness
Nystagmus
rhythmic, rapid, back and forth movement of the eyes
Ocular dermoid
mass in the eye containing elements found in skin tissue such as epithelial cells and hair
Palpebral reflex
blink reflex when the eyelids are touched
Papilledema
swelling of the optic disc due to intracranial pressure
Photphobia
sensitivity or visual intolerance to light
Proptosis
forward displacement of the eye from its orbit
Pupillary light reflex (PLR)
constriction of the pupils in response to light and dilation of the pupils when the light is removed
Retinal detachment
separation of the inner layer of the retina from the other layers of the eyeball
