Chapter 12 Flashcards
How do you improve performance?
training with regular physical activity
example: a distance runner needs exceptional cardiovascular fitness and muscular endurance
football lineman needs strength
gymnast needs flexibility
What is Skill Related Fitness?
abilities that help learn skills faster and better
What is specificity?
training in the gym should be specified for the outcome desired
Example: cyclist does a lot of biking and cardiovascular fitness and leg workouts
What are fast twitch muscle fibers?
good for rapid movements. Contract quickly but get tired quickly
What are slow twitch muscle fibers?
good for endurance activities. work for a long time without getting tired
Benefits of anaerobic exercise? (5)
absence of oxygen
provides additional high energy fuel
breaks down lactic acid after all the energy is used up
improves body’s ability to improve energy
tolerate higher levels of lactic acid
Benefits of aerobic exercise? (3)
oxygen is a available
rebuilds the high energy fuel
increases cardiovascular fitness
Benefits of aerobic interval training? (2)
improves efficiency of the aerobic metabolism
improves maximum aerobic capacity
What is overload syndrome?
when people push themselves too hard and do not leave adequate time for rest making them more susceptible to hyperkinetic conditions
What is tapering?
a reduction in training volume and intensity prior to competition to elicit peak performance
What is power?
the ability to exert maximal force on an object in a short period
Hyperkinetic conditions?
fatigue, irritability, sleep problems, higher risk of injuries
What is compulsive pe?
exercise addiction (me)
Goal for muscular endurance training
is to allow the muscle to work against resistance for a long period of time without getting fatigued
Goal for muscular strength training?
to strengthen and condition the musculoskeletal system
