Chapter 11 Flashcards
Reasons for poor back alignment? (6)
weak abdominals weak lower back injury poor posture disease stresses
Guidelines for people dying down? (3)
pillow between the knees or under knees
choose a pillow that supports head and neck in neutral alignment
avoid reading in bed
Guidelines for people sitting? (5)
sit upright chest lifted shoulder down and back knees slightly lower than hips firm surface for feet
Why neutral body alignment for the spine?
because it is the proper position for the spine to maintain the lordotic curve. Does not have too much or too little curve
Why does back pain occur?
weak abdominal stresses and strain poor posture prolonged sitting improper lifting techniques overweight/obese
Benefits of curvature of spine?
helps balance forces on the body and minimize tension
also provide the ability for humans to walk up right
Consequences of forward head posture?
headache dizziness neck pain arm pain shoulder pain
Microtrauma?
injury so small that it is not directed when it occurs
Core Musculature? two types
core muscles work to maintain spine in a neutral zone
Mobilizers
Stabilizers
Safe back positions? (6)
Head Centered Chest up Shoulders back and down abdominals suck and tuck knees straight and relaxed feet parallel and weight balanced
Why resistance exercises?
can help improve strength and endurance of the back muscles because muscles on one side of the joint may be stronger than the other
What muscle groups constitute core?
Rectus abdominis
external obliques
internal abdominal oblique
What is kyphosis?
excessive outward curvature of the spine
What is lordosis?
excessive inward curvature of the spine
What are ergonomics?
Discipline that uses biomechanical principles to develop tools and workplace settings that put the least amount of strain on the body
