Indicative of: Emotional stress or diabetic ketoacidosis

Gradual increases and decreases in respirations with periods of apnea
Indicative of: Increasing intracranial pressure, brain stem injury
Biot’s
Rapid, deep respirations (gasps) with short pauses between sets
Indicative of: Spinal meningitis, many CNS causes, head injury
Kussmaul
Tachypnea and hyperpnea
Indicative of: Renal failure, metabolic acidosis, diabetic ketoacidosis
Apneusic
Prolonged inspiratory phase with shortened expiratory phase
Indicative of: Lesion in brainstem
