Chapter 11 - Vocab Part 1 Flashcards
Angiogram
X-ray of a blood vessel
Angioplasty
Surgical repair of a blood vessel
Anoxia
Lack of oxygen in body tissues
Aorta
The largest artery in the body
Aortic stenosis
Narrowing of the aorta
Apex of the heart
The lower tip of the heart
Arrhythmia
Without rhythm; an irregular heart beat
Arterial anastomosis
Surgical connection between two arteries
Arteriography
X-ray recording of arteries
Arteriole
A small artery
Arteriosclerosis
Hardening of an artery with collection of fatty plaque
Artery
Largest type of blood vessel. Carries blood AWAY from the heart to the rest of the body
Atherectomy
Removal of plaque (lipids and clots) that accumulate in the lining of an artery
Atheroma
Mass of fatty plaque that collects in an artery
Atherosclerosis
Forms of arteriosclerosis in which fatty plaque deposits in the interior lining of an artery
Atrial
Pertaining to atrium (upper chamber of the heart)
Atrioventricular bundle
Specialized muscle fibers connecting the atria with the ventricles and transmitting electrical impulses between them.
Atrium (plural: atria)
Upper chamber of the heart
Atrioventricular node (AV node)
Specialized tissue in the wall between atria. Electrical impulses pass from the pacemaker through the AV node and bundle of His toward the ventricles
Capillary
The smallest blood vessel
Carbon dioxide
Waste gas released by body cells, transported by veins of the heart, and then to lungs for exhalation.
Cardiogenic shock
- Results from failure of the heart in its pumping action.
2. Shock is the circulatory failure associated with inadequate delivery of oxygen and nutrients to body tissues.
Cardiomegaly
Enlargement of the heart
Cardiomyopathy
Disease of heart muscle
Coronary arteries
Blood vessels that branch from the aorta and carry oxygen-rich blood to heart muscle.
Cyanosis
Abnormal condition of blueness of the skin; caused by decreased oxygen and increased carbon dioxide in the blood
Deoxygenated blood
Oxygen-poor blood
Diastole (!!! SG)
Relaxation phase of the heartbeat. At rest.
Electrocardiogram
Record of the electricity flowing through the heart
Endocardium
Inner lining of the heart
Endothelium
Innermost lining of the blood vessels
