Chapter 10 - Vocab Part 3 Flashcards
Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
Nerves outside the brain and spinal cord; cranial, spinal, and autonomic nerves
Pia Mater
Thin, delicate inner membrane of the meninges.
Plexus (plural: plexuses)
A large, interlacing network of nerves
Poliomyelitis
Inflammation of the gray matter of the spinal cord
Polyneuritis
Inflammation of many nerves
Pons
The part of the brain anterior to the cerebellum and between the medulla and the rest of the midbrain
Quadriplegia
Paralysis of all four limbs; both arms and legs
Radiculitis
Inflammation of a spinal nerve root
Radiculopathy
Disease of a spinal nerve root
Receptor
An organ that receives a nervous stimulus and passes it on to afferent nerves; the skin, ears, eyes, and taste buds are receptors
Sciatic Nerve
The nerve extending from the base of the spine down the thigh, lower leg, and foot
Sciatica
Pain that follows the pathway of the sciatic nerve caused by compression or trauma of the nerve or its roots
Sensory nerve
Carries messages toward the brain and spinal cord from the receptor; afferent nerve
Spinal nerves (!!)
31 pairs arising from the spinal cord
Stimulus (plural: stimuli)
An agent of change (light, sound, touch) in the internal or external environment that evokes a response
Stroma
- Connective and supporting tissue of an organ
2. Glial cells are the stromal tissue of the brain
Subdural hematoma (!!!)
Collection of blood in the space below the dura mater surrounding the brain (collection of blood within meningeal layers)
Sulcus (plural: sulci) (!!!!!)
Depression or groove in the surface of the cerebral cortex; fissure
Sympathetic nerves
Autonomic nerves that influence the bodily functions involuntarily in times of stress
Synapse
The space through which a nervous impulse travels between nerve cells or between nerve and muscle or glandular cells
Syncopal
Pertaining to syncope (fainting)
Syncope
Fainting; temporary loss of consciousness
Thalamic
Pertaining to the thalamus
Thalamus
Main relay center of the brain; conducts impulses between the spinal cord and the cerebrum
Trigeminal neuralgia
Flashes of stab-like pain along the course of a branch of a trigeminal nerve (5th cranial nerve). Trigeminal nerve has branches in the eye, upper and lower jaw.
Vagal
Pertaining to the vagus nerve
Vagus nerve
Tenth cranial nerve with branches to the chest and abdominal organs
Ventricles of the brain
Canals in the brain that contain CSF.
