Chapter 10 - Pathology And Lab Tests Flashcards
Absence seizure
Form of seizure consisting of momentary clouding of consciousness and loss of awareness of surroundings.
Alzheimer disease
Brain disorder marked by progressive, gradual mental deterioration (dementia) along with personality changes and impairment of daily functioning.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)
Degenerative disorder of motor neurons in the spinal cord and brainstem. Results in total body paralysis.
Aneurysm
Enlarged weakened area in an arterial wall, which may rupture, leading to hemorrhage and CVA (stroke)
Astrocytoma
Malignant tumor of astrocytes
Aura
Peculiar symptom or sensation occurring before the onset of an attack of migraine or an epileptic seizure
Bell palsy
Unilateral (one side) paralysis of the face caused by a disorder of the facial nerve
Brain tumor
Abnormal growth of brain tissue and meninges
Cerebral angiography (!!)
X-ray record of blood vessels in the brain after injection of contrast material
Cerebral concussion (!!!)
- Type of traumatic brain injury caused by a blow to the head
- Temporary brain dysfunction after injury. No structural damage or intracranial pressure.
- Usually clears within 24 hours
Cerebral contusion (!!!)
- Bruising of brain tissue resulting from direct trauma to the head
- Usually skull fracture, edema/swelling, and increase intracranial pressure
- Neurological disorder persists longer than 24 hours
Cerebral hemorrhage
Bruising of an artery in the brain
Cerebral palsy
Partial paralysis and lack of muscular coordination caused by loss of oxygen or blood flow to the cerebrum during pregnancy or in the preinatal period.
Cerebrospinal fluid analysis (CSF) (!!!)
Samples of CSF are examined for blood cells, protein, glucose, tumor cells, bacteria and other substances.
Cerebrovascular accident (CVA)
Disruption of the normal blood supply to the brain; stroke
