Chapter 11 (The Muscular System VI) Flashcards
Muscles of the Pelvic Floor support …
pelvic viscera, resist increased intraabdominal pressure, and provide sphincter function
Muscles of the Pelvic Floor (Examples)
Levator Ani
Ischiococcygeus
Levator Ani
Pubococcygeus
Iliococcygeus
The pelvic diaphragm is formed by
The levator ani, ischiococcygeus, and the fascia
The levator ani, ischiococcygeus, and the fascia stretch
From the pubis anteriorly to the coccyx posteriorly, and from one lateral wall of the pelvis to the other
The pelvic diaphragm separates
The pelvic cavity above from the perineum below.
What is the perineum
A diamond-shaped area inferior to the pelvic diaphragm
Extends from the pubic symphysis anteriorly, to the coccyx posteriorly, and to the ischial tuberosities laterally
How are perineal muscles arranged ?
Arranged in two layers:
a) Superficial
b) Deep
What’s the function of the deep muscles of the perineum ?
Males: Assist in urination and ejaculation
Females: Assist in urination and compression of the vagina
