Chapter 11 (The Muscular System III) Flashcards
Muscles of facial expression
Lie within the subcutaneous layer
Usually originate in the fascia or skull bones and insert into the skin.
Function of the muscles of facial expression
Move the skin
Extrinsic Eye Muscles
Lateral Rectus Medial Rectus Superior Rectus Inferior Rectus Superior Oblique Inferior Oblique
Muscles that move the mandible
Are known as ‘muscles of mastication’.
Muscles of Mastication
Temporalis Masseter Buccinator Lateral Pterygoid Medial Pterygoid
Temporalis, Masseter, and Medial Pterygoid
Account for the strength of the bite
Medial and Lateral pterygoid
Help to chew by moving the mandible from side to side. Additionally, these muscles protract (protrude) the mandible
The hyoid bone
Multiple muscles attach to, move, and stabilize it
They include the Digastric muscle and many others named ____hyoid, depending on their origins
These are frequently referred to as the strap muscles, and they are considered the external muscles to the larynx
Extrinsic muscles of the tongue
Originate outside the tongue and insert into it. They move the tongue in various directions.
Extrinsic muscles of the tongue (Examples)
Genioglossus
Styloglossus
Palatoglossus
Hyoglossus
Intrinsic muscles of the tongue
Intrinsic tongue muscles originate and insert within the tongue. They change the shape of the tongue.
Intrinsic muscles of the tongue (Examples)
1- Anterior and Lateral a) Sternocleidomastoid b) Scalenes (3) 2- Posterior a) Splenius Capitus, Cervicis b) Erector Spinae
