Chapter 11 (The Muscular System II) Flashcards
Effects of muscle fascicle arrangement
All muscle fibers are parallel to one another within a single fascicle.
Fascicles, however, form patterns with respect to the tendons.
Patterns formed by fascicles
Parallel Fusiform Circular Triangular Pennate
Muscle fascicles must compromise
Between power and range of motion
The longer the fibers in a muscle
The greater the range of motion it can produce.
The power of a muscle depends
On its total cross-sectional area.
Coordination among muscles
Muscles do not work in isolation
Movements usually result from several skeletal muscles acting as a group
Antagonistic Pairs
Most skeletal muscles at joints are arranged in opposing pairs. These can be Agonists or Antagonists.
Example: Flexors vs. Extensors
Agonist (Prime Mover)
Responsible for the action
Antagonist
Stretches and yields to the effects of the agonist
Synergists
Contract and stabilize the intermediate joints
Prevent unwanted movements at other joints
Aid the movement of the agonist
Fixators
Stabilize the origin of the agonist so that they act more efficiently
