Chapter 1 - Intro to Pathology Flashcards
Deals with the study of disease, which involves change in the body structure and function
Pathology
Study of structural changes in the body caused by diseases
Pathological Anatomy
Study of changes in the structure of the body that are readily seen with the unaided eye as a result of disease
Gross Pathology
Study of microscopic changes that cells, tissues and organs undergo as a result of disease
Microscopic Pathology (Histopathology)
Study of tissue specimen excised surgically in a major or minor operation
Surgical Pathology
Study of disease by means of body secretions, excretions, and other body fluids performed in the laboratory in the diagnosis of a disease
Clinical Pathology
Study of changes in body functions due to disease
Physiological Pathology
Study of disease to ascertain cause and manner of death
Medico-Lethal Pathology
The study of widespread processes of disease such as inflammation, degeneration,o necrosis or cell death
General Pathology
Features of disease in relation to particular tissue organ, or organ systems
Special Pathology
Postmortem examination of the body organs and tissues to determine cause of death
Autopsy
A public officer whose chief duty is to investigate questionable deaths
Coroner
Forensically trained physician who investigates questionable or unattended deaths
Medical Examiner
Essential qualities or characteristics by which something is recognized
Nature
State or functional disequilibrium, change in function or structure that is considered to be abnormal
Disease
A disease starts at the cell level then proceeds to tissue then the organs then the whole body
Virchow’s Cellular Theory of Disease
The term denoting the naming of the disease or syndrome: to recognize the nature of a disease
Diagnosis
Prediction of the outcome of a disease
Prognosis
Unfavorable condition arising during the course of a disease
Complication
Objective disturbances produced by disease observed by a physician
Signs
Subjective disturbances caused by disease that are felt or experienced by patient but not directly measurable
Symptoms
A set of signs and symptoms associated with a particular disease
Syndrome
Pertaining to or characterized by fever
Febrile
Existing at the time of birth
Congenital
A condition transmitted from parent to offspring
Hereditary
Present after birth
Acquired
Having rapid and severe onset; usually fatal
Fulminating
Temporary cessation of symptoms of disease
Remission
Reappearance of symptoms after a period of remission
Reccurence
Increase in severity of of a disease
Exacerbation
A disease that can be directly transmitted from one person to another
Communicable
Number of cases of disease present in a specific population
Prevalence
The manner in which a disease develops
Pathogenesis
Disease present in a community
Endemic
Disease higher than normal numbers
Epidemic
Widespread Disease
Pandemic
Disease that occurs randomly in isolated matters
Mortality Rate
Of unknown case
Idiopathic; “You IDIOt, How do you not KNOW this”
Results from the adverse activity of medical personnel
Iatrogenic
Infection acquired at the hospital
Nosocomial
Disease at a workplace
Occupational
Poisoned by a drug or toxic substance
Intoxication
Harboring animal parasites
Infestation
Hypersensitivity to a substance that does not normally cause a reaction to the immune system
Allergies
A condition or disease in which there is no recognizable change in anatomy
Functional
A condition in which there is a change in anatomy
Organic
Disease due to lack of dietary or metabolic substance
Deficiency
Body invaded by disease
Infection
Abcess
An inflamed area of pus walled off by membrane
Acapnia
Carbon Dioxide deficiency in blood and tissue
Acidosis
Excessively acid condition of the body fluids
Acquired
A condition that presents itself after birth
Acromegaly
Hyperfunction of the anterior of the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland after ossification has been completed
Adenoma
Epithelial lining of glands or ducts; usually are slow growing, benign neoplasms epithelial
Alkalosis
Excessively alkalinity of the body in the tissues
Allergies
Having a hypersensitivity to a substance that does not normally cause a reaction
Alzheimers Disease
Most common for of dementia in the United States All of the parts to control memory and thought and motion
Amelia
Congenital absence of one or more limbs
Anasarca
Generalized massive edema in subcutaneous tissue
Anemia
Generalized massive edema in subcutaneous tissue
Aneurysm
A localized dilation of a blood vessel
Angioma
A benign tumor that consists of vessels
Abatement
Decrease in, such as in pain
Abrasion
An excoriation, a circumscribed removal of the epidermis
