Q

What was wrong w/ the therory of Spontaneous generation?

A

The initial theory was that introducing sterilized broth to air would expose it to “life force”, however, Pasteur’s experiment proved that the organisms that were seen had actually settled there from the air.

Q

What are endospores and why are they important?

A

Endospores are a more hardy and dormant version of bacteria. They are formed in times of stress or in the event of a lack of nutrient availability. They allow the bacteria to lay dormant for extended periods of time

Q

What are pathogens and how do they cause disease?

A

Pathogens are organisms that cause disease, and they do this by disrupting the native flora within the body. When they increase in number they increase the amt of toxins being produced. This leads to infection

Q

Why is malaria so hard to eradicate?

A

There is no vaccine for it. Also the vectors, which care mosquitos, are hard to control as well. If you can’t control the vector you cannot prevent the spread of the disease.

Define Bioremediation

A

The introduction of microorganisms to a new environement in hopes that they degrade the pollutants in the area

17
Q

Antigen v Antibody

A

Antigen: Any foreign substance that triggers an immune response aka the production of antibodies

Antibodies: proteins that are created as a result of antigen presence

18
Q

How are microorganisims important to the Environtment?

A

They are important for waste break down, nitrogen fixation, O2 production, and nutrient recycling.

19
Q

Archaea Traits

A

-Single cell
-Lack Peptidoglycans
-Most are extremophiles
