Chapter 07: Space Planning Flashcards
Access Floor
A system consisting of completely removable and interchangeable floor panels that are supported on adjustable pedestals or stringers (or both) to allow access to the area beneath the floor (also known as raised floor).
Access Provider
The operator of any facility that is used to convey telecommunications signals to and from a customer premises.
Command Center
A location where network and IT systems are managed and monitored. A command center is commonly referred to as a Network Operations Center (NOC).
List the two functions of the telecommunications entrance room.
- Provide a secure point when entering media from access providers can be converted from outdoor cable to indoor cable.
- House the access provider-owned equipment such as their demarcation, termination, and provisioning equipment.
What is the main function of a command center?
The command center should have monitoring, but not control, capability for all data center building systems.
What is the recommendation for a multi-purpose building with a data center, for general building deliveries?
General building deliveries should be done in a non-secure loading doc, separate from the data center.
What is the minimum space recommendation for high value storage in a data center?
23m^2 (250’^2)
What is the preferred location for a staging area?
Adjacent to the computer room.
What is the minimum space recommendation for engineering offices?
10m^2 (100’^2)
What is the maximum ASHRAE NC rating for engineering offices in a data center?
35dB
Which data center space should have its own air handling system?
Print room
What is the preferred configuration of RPPs in a computer room?
A staffed (or at least volunteer) fire station and police station should be within 8 km (5 mi) of the data center site.
What is the preferred location of a PDU?
In a service gallery (a space outside but adjacent to the computer room).
If both power and telecom cabling are distributed from below the access floor, through which aisle do you route the power cabling?
The power cabling should be routed either adjacent to or within the cold aisle.
If power and fiber optic telecom cabling are distributed from overhead, and copper telecom cabling is distributed from below the access floor, through which aisle do you route the copper telecom cabling?
Copper Telecom cabling should be routed adjacent to or within the hot aisles.
If power and fiber optic telecom cabling are distributed from overhead, which cabling should be routed above the other?
Fiber optic telecom cabling should be routed above the power cabling on separate containment.
What is the definition of PUE?
The measure of power consumed by the data center as a whole divided by the power consumed by servers, storage devices, and other ITE.
What is the formula for PUE?
= Total facility power / ITE power
What is the formula for data center infrastructure efficiency (DCiE)
= 1/PUE = ITE power / Total facility power X 100%
What should be the minimum separation between transformers (other than those in PDUs) and ITE and data cabling?
0.6 m (2’)
What is the preferred separation between transformers (other than those in PDUs) and ITE and data cabling?
1.2 m (2’)
List the electrical equipment typically installed in the computer room spaces.
- RPPs
- Power strips
- Distributed UPS located in close proximity to the loads they support (i.e., rack or row level) with immobilized electrolyte batteries (e.g., VRLA)
- OCP open racks containing AC-DC power supplies, busbars and BBUs
What factors determine the space required for the power system?
The space required for the power systems will be proportional to the required capacity and level of redundancy/reliabilty of the electrical systems.
When equipment cabinets or racks are installed adjacent to each other – thus forming a continuous aisle – what is the recommended aisle length?
Adjacent cabinets and racks should not exceed 16 m (53’)
Where one end of the aisle is closed off or has no personal exits, what should be the maximum length of the aisle?
6m (20’)
What is the minimum required width of a hot aisle?
0.9 m (3’)
What is the recommended width of a hot aisle?
1.2 m (4’)
What is the minimum required width of a hot aisle?
0.9 m (3’)
