Chapter 04 Flashcards
Selective Attention
To deliberately ignore certain sounds and distractions
Direct Inner Awareness
To reflect on inner states (thinking about a dream)
Nonconscious
Unaware of body processes (hair growing)
Conscious
Alert awareness
Preconscious
Just below surface awareness, easy to recall, placed there temp.
Unconscious
Primitive instincts and urges that are repressed, not available to the conscious mind
Repression
Without thinking, the idea/desire is automatically rejected in unconscious
Suppression
Having thought about it, deliberately put idea/desire into unconscious
Circadian Rhythm
The sleep-wake cycle
Beta Waves
When individual is awake and alert
Alpha Waves
When individual is awake, but relaxed — helps fall asleep
Theta Waves
Dozing state of mind
Spindles (K complex)
Minor noises do not wake the sleeper
Delta Waves
Deep sleep, hard to wake
REM Sleep
Cycle back to active waves but do not wake up — vivid dreams occur in REM sleep
• 5 cycles of rejuvenation theory (~7 hrs)
Cognitive Theory
Dreams about real life problems, anticipated events, or just residue thoughts of the day
Psychoanalytic Theory
Freud: sleep relaxes ego control, allows dreams to reveal unconscious impulses that we hide when awake
Activation Synthesis Theory
Theory that the cortex receives random stimulation while sleeping, activates RAS then signal is worked into a dream
Insomnia
When a person cannot fall asleep or can fall asleep but cannot stay asleep
Narcolepsy
Spontaneous sleeping during the day
Sleep Apnea
When a person stops breathing and wakes up, they then fall back to sleep but are REM deprived
Sleep Terrors
These occur in deep sleep, and the person wakes up suddenly — their fear is more severe and dream content less coherent than a nightmare
Hypnosis
Is the willing suspension of conscious control of behavior
[Hypnosis] Role Theory
Ability to cooperate, to act hypnotized (willingness)
[Hypnosis] Response Set
Holds expectations consistent with behavior under hypnosis (set of behaviors)
[Hypnosis] Dissociation
Ability to focus attention away from actual reality (ignoring sensory input)
Meditation
To use a conscious, intentional focus to relax
[Meditation] Transcendental
To use a mantra to focus (repeating “Ohm”)
[Meditation] Mindfulness
To focus on the moment
Biofeedback
To use conscious control to alter body functions (people can be trained to consciously reduce their own blood pressure)
Depressants
Slow down activity of central nervous system, causes a person to feel relaxed
Stimulants
Increase central nervous system, person feels more alert
Hallucinogens
Act in serotonin receptor sites, cause perception without sensation
