Chap 4 - Transport In Plants Flashcards
What are roots used for in a plant?
Absorbing water and mineral
Name 3 features of a leaf?
Thin, shorter diffusion distance, Branching veins which transport water + mineral ions, glucose taken out of leaf, Stomata used for gas exchange
What are the 2 types of transport vessel?
Phloem tubes which carry glucose up to the plant, Xylem tubes carry water and mineral ions up from roots to shoots
What are the 5 cross sections of a leaf?
Upper epidermis, Palisade mesophyll, Vascular bundle, Spongy mesophyll, Stomata on lower epidermis
Define humidity?
Amount of water vapour in the air
What is the stomata?
Pores on the leaves on the plant that allow for gas exchange that can open or close dependant on conditions
What is transpiration?
Movement of water and mineral ions from roots to shoots and leaves within the xylem tube
What is translocation?
Movement of glucose up and down stems to growing and storage tissues through phloem tube
What cells do stomata have?
Guard cells
What is carbon dioxide used for within stomata in leaf?
Reactant for photosynthesis
Name 2 control variables when investigating transpiration?
Number of leaves, species of plant
How do you calculate density?
Amount of stomata present divided by area of leave
How is water absorbed from soil by roots?
Osmosis
Does a phloem cell have permeable cell walls?
Yes
What are the 4 things that effect the rate of transpiration?
Temperature, humidity, Air movement, light intensity
