Chap 4 - Respiratory Vocabulary Flashcards
Tubular air passageway that branches off the trachea to the other or left and enters each lung. It carries inhaled and exhaled air to and from the bronchioles.
Bronchus
Rounded top of each lung
Apex
What nerve gives impulses that cause the diaphragm to move up and down?
Phrenic nerve
Pertaining to a normal rate and rhythm of breathing
Eupneic (eupnea)
Indentation on the medial side of each lung where the bronchus, pulmonary artery, and nerves enter the lung and the pulmonary vein exits.
Hilum
Central opening through which air flows inside he trachea, bronchus, or bronchiole.
Lumen
Smaller cavity within the thoracic cavity that contains the trachea and other structures not related to the respiratory system.
Mediastinum
Compound that transports oxygen in the blood and is formed by the combination of oxygen with the hemoglobin of red blood cells.
Oxyhemoglobin
Functional part of the lung (like alveoli) as opposed to the connective tissue framework.
Parenchyma
Protein-fat compound that creates surface tension and keeps the walls of the alveolus from collapsing inward with each inhalation.
Surfactant
