Alternate name for the gastrointestinal system
Alimentary canal
Process by which digested food nutrients move through villi of the small intestine into the blood
Absorption
Enzyme from pancreas. Breaks down starch and carbs in duodenum into simple sugars and food fibers
Amylase
Transition between the body of the stomach and the narrowing channel of the pylorus
Antrum
Fluid produced by liver and stored in gallbladder. Released into duodenum to digest fats
Bile
Small area of stomach where esophagus enters.
Cardia / cardiac sphincter
Part of abdominal aorta from which arteries arise to take blood to the stomach, small intestine, liver, gallbladder, and pancreas
Celiac trunk
First part of large intestine, a short pouch-like area.
Cecum
Hormone released by duodenum when it receives food from the stomach. Causes gallbladder to release bile.
