Chap 4 (osmosis) Flashcards
Flow of water across a membrane is always what?
Passive, unaffected by membrane potentials and is always driven by its own concentration gradient
What is osmosis?
The flow of water across a membrane down its concentration gradient
Direction of passive water flow into or out of cell depends on what?
Concentration gradient
What is osmolarity?
Total solute particle concentration of a solution.
Two solution have the same osmolarity. One higher than the other, one lower.
iso-osmotic, hyperosmotic, hypo-osmotic
Osmolarity can be interchanged with
osmotic pressure
Osmotic pressure is proportional to what?
concentration of the solute
What is tonicity?
function of concentration of nonpermeating solutes outside a cell relative to the concentration inside the cell.
What does isotonic mean?
when it does not alter cell volume neither shrinks nor swells.
What is a solution that causes cells to shrink? Causes to swell?
Hypertonic, hypotonic
