CH6Labtests Flashcards
Amylase and lipase test
Testing for enzymes amylase and lipase in blood
Elevated levels are associated with pancreatitis
LFT’s
Liver Function Tests
Performed on blood serum
Testing for enzymes and bilirubin in blood
- ALT (alanine transaminase) and AST (aspartame transaminase)
High levels indicate liver damage; hepatitis
-alk phos. (Alkaline phosphatase ) high levels indicate bone, liver disease
-Serum Bilirubin -direct bilirubin measures conjugated bilirubin
-indirect bilirubin measures unconjugated bilirubin high levels indicate excessive
Hemolysis, occuring in newborns
Stool Culture
Test for microorganisms present in feces
Stool Guiana test
Hemoccult test
Test to detect hidden blood in feces
Test for colon cancer
Lower gastrointestinal series
Barium enima
X-ray images of the colon and rectum obtained after injection of barium into the rectum
Upper gastrointestinal series
X-ray images of the esophagus, stomach, and small intestine obtained after administering barium by mouth
Barium swallow
X-ray study of the esophagus
Choleangiography
X-ray examination of the biliary system performed after injection of contrast into the bile ducts
Percutaneous transhepatic cholangiography-medium is injected through the abdominal wall into the biliary vessels
Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP)- medium is administered through an oral catheter then passes through esophagus, stomach and duodenum and into the bile ducts
Computed Tomography (CT)
Series of x-ray images taken in multiple views (especially in cross section)
Abdominal Ultrasonagraphy
Sound waves beamed into the abdomen produce and image of abdominal viscera
Especially helpful for examining fluid filled structures
Endoscopic Ultrasonography (EUS)
Use of and endoscope combined with ultrasound to examine the organs of the gastrointestinal tract
Magnetic Resonance Imaging
MRI
Magnetic waves produce images of organs and tissues in all three planes of the body
HIDA scan
Cholescintigraphy
Radioactive imaging procedure that tracks the production and flow of bile from the liver and gallbladder to the intestine
Determines gallbladder fin
Fecal transplant
Transfer of stool from a healthy donor into the gastrointestinal tract of a recipient
Bariatric surgery
Procedures used to achieve weight loss in people with severe obesity
