Ch14: Electronic Aids to Daily Living Flashcards
Alternative
A different way of accomplishing the same task
Augmentative
Supplementation, by a device, of existing capabilities to support doing an activity in the manner in which it is typically done
Continuous Control
A type of control function used with electronic aids to daily living that results in successively greater or smaller degrees of output (ex. closing the blinds, dimming the lights)
Discrete Control
- A type of control function used with electronic aids to daily living in which each event requires a specific entry.
- Each selection produces a different result (ex. on/off, open/closed)
Electrically Powered Page Turners
Devices that hold a book or other reading material and mechanically turn the pages when a switch or switches are pressed by the user
Electronic Aid to Daily Living
Device that allows control of appliances (e.g., radio, television, CD player, telephone) through the use of one or more switches
Infrared Light Transmission
Energy transmission in the region of the electromagnetic radiation spectrum at wavelengths longer than those of visible light, but shorter than those of radio waves
Internet of Things (IoT)
Network that connects devices (e.g., vehicles, home appliances) allowing them to interact, exchange data, and be controlled from a central point
Latched Control
A control interface that is turned on by the first activation and off by the next activation
Momentary Control
An interface that controls a device or produces an action only for the length of time it is activated
Mouth Sticks
Devices that are held in the teeth and are used for direct manipulation
Programmable Controllers
An electronic aid to daily living approach that is based on the storage of user-selected codes that are appropriate to a wide range of appliances; entering the correct code into the controller allows control of the appliance by the user
Radio Frequency Transmission
Energy transmission in the region of the electromagnetic radiation spectrum at wavelengths longer than infrared, but shorter than those of audio waves
Remote Control
Small, usually hand-held, electronic device for controlling another device. Remote controls can connect to the controlled device by wires or wirelessly (e.g., using infrared or radio frequency transmission)
Trainable Controllers
Devices that provide functions of electronic aids to daily living by storing the control code for any specific appliance function
