-Sense of belonging + competence + autonomy
What is Happiness?
-Feeling connected, free, and capable
What is the relationship between Ostracism and Love?
-Ostracism is real pain whereas love is the natural pain killer
What is a predictor that people are friends?
- Proximity!= the best predictor
- Interaction= how often people’s paths cross
- Anticipation of interaction
- Mere exposure=increases liking (doesn’t breed contempt)
- Attractiveness
Why does Proximity breed liking?
-Availability= more opportunities to interact with them
What is the nature of emotions?
-They are more instantaneous than thinking
What is the Matching Phenomenon?
-The tendency for both sexes to choose as partners those who are a “good match” in attractiveness & other traits
What is the Physical Attractiveness Stereotype?
-Assumption that physically attractive people possess more socially desirable traits= Beautiful is good
What is the nature of being really attractive?
-Being perfectly average= symmetrical
What body shape do men mostly prefer on women?
-An hourglass shape= waists 30% smaller than hips which indicate peak sexual fertility
What effect does being sexually aroused have?
-It’ll increase attractiveness for the other person temporarily
Do birds of a feather stick together?
-Yes because the more similar you are to your partner, the less likely you are to divorce
What does Dissimilarity breed?
-Dislike
When do opposites attract?
- They don’t attract in behavioral tendencies BUT They do
- When their scents are different from yours=encouraging their offspring to have greater immunity
What is Complementarity?
-The supposed tendency that your partner completes what is missing in you and vise-versa
When would people like you?
-When you show that you like them= Reciprocity
What is Ingratiation?
-The use of strategies like flattery to gain your favor
What is the Reward Theory of Attraction?
-The theory that we like those whose behavior is rewarding to us or who we associate rewarding events
