cervical –
pertaining to the cervix
uterus -
the womb; the organ where the ova implants and the fetus develops and grows
vagina –
the birth canal; a muscular tube that extends from the cervix to the outside of the body
perimetrium –
the outermost layer of the uterus; synonymous with the visceral peritoneum
endometrium –
inner lining of the uterus (thickens during menstruation and sheds if there is no implantation of a fertilized egg)
labia minora –
the pair of thinner and smaller, medial folds of skin of the vulva
mons pubis –
a pad of fatty tissue that overlies the front of the pubic bone
ovulation –
release of an oocyte from a follicle (a mature follicle rises to the surface of the ovary and ruptures, releasing the oocyte, which is then called an ovum)
perineum –
the area that extends from below the external genitalia to the anus in either sex
prepuce –
the retractable tissue around the clitoris
gynecology –
study of the diseases and disorders of female reproductive system; one who studies female diseases is a gynecologist
neonatology –
study of disorders of the newborn; a specialist in disorders of the newborn is a
neonatologist
colpodynia –
vaginal pain
endometriosis –
inflammation/infection of the endometrium (inner layer of the uterus)
hysteroptosis –
prolapse of the uterus
vulvitis –
inflammation/infection of the vulva
Vaginitis –
inflammation/infection of the vagina
salpingitis –
inflammation/infection of the uterine/fallopian tubes
fibroid –
a benign tumor in uterine tissue that gets its name from resembling a fibrous mass
mastitis –
inflammation/infection of the breast tissue
amenorrhea –
absence or abnormal cessation of menstrual flow
dysmenorrhea –
painful menstruation, refers to menstrual cramps that are severe enough to
interfere with daily activities
menorrhagia –
abnormally heavy/excessive bleeding during menses
menorrhea –
normal menstrual bleeding
