Q

Billas Vet Sx 2021

Incidence of and risk factors for surgical site infection following canine limb amputation

% developed SSI?
4 reasons more likely to develop SSI?

A

Thirty-one dogs (31/248, 12.5%) developed an SSI of the amputation site

More likely to develop SSI:
- pre-op bacterial infection 5.7x (vs. neoplasia)
- trauma as reason for amputation 4.5x (vs. neoplasia)

Q

Galliano VSURG 2022

Subcutaneous vascular access port implantation in the axillary or femoral/external iliac vein at the time of full limb amputation in dogs

  • minor/major complication rates?
  • which placement associated with euthanasia?
  • difference in complication rate for placement?
A

Minor and major complications were recorded in 1/13 and 2/13 aSVAPs, 0/4 and 0/4 fSVAPs, and 3/19 and 4/19 of jSVAPs

Two dogs with jSVAPs were euthanized due to SVAP-related complications

No difference in complication rate was detected between groups
